Corgi Aviation Archive series AA34811 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the Vickers Wellington Mk.1c s/n R1162/AA-Y with “Soda Syphon” art on the nose. Assigned to No.75 (NZ) Sqn, RAF, stationed at RAF Fetwell in Norfolk, England, in 1941.
No.75 (RN) Squadron
When Britain declared war on Germany, the Royal New Zealand Air Force had just taken delivery of 30 Vickers Wellington Mk1C in England and had sent aircrews to train on the new aircraft.
The New Zealand government offered these airmen and aircraft for use with the RAF, and on April 4, 1940, No. 75 (NZ) Squadron was formed. It was the first Commonwealth squadron created in the Second World War.
In October 1946, Britain transferred the squadron number, badge and colours to the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
Vickers Wellington
The Vickers Wellington was a British monoplane twin-engined, long-range medium bomber of the Second World War. It first flew on June 15, 1936, and entered service in October 1938.
By 1943, it started to be superseded by the larger four-engined bombers. Nevertheless, it remained operational in the Middle East and Mediterranean and in its anti-submarine role.
Over eleven thousand and four hundred airframes were completed before production ended in 1945.
A feature of the aircraft is its geodetic airframe fuselage structure, which Barnes Wallis principally designed.
The Wellington was initially powered by a pair of Bristol Pegasus radial engines, but various engines were later used, including the Bristol Hercules and the Rolls-Royce Merlin engines.
The armament comprises six to eight machine guns, two in the nose, two in the tail and two in waist positions and up to 2000 kg (4,500 lb) of stores in an internal bomb bay.
