SkyMax Models SM4009 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the Hawker Tempest Mk.V serial number EJ762, squadron code JJ-F. Pilot F/Lt. David C. Fairbanks of No.274 Squadron Royal Air Force (RAF), while based at Ravenstein, Netherlands, November 1944.
David Fairbanks
David Charles Fairbanks (1922 – 1975) was an American who became a flying ace with the Royal Canadian Air Force during WW II. He remained in the RCAF until 1955, retiring with the rank of squadron leader credited with fourteen aerial victories and being awarded the DFC with two bars.
Hawker Tempest
The Hawker Tempest was a British single-seat, single-engine fighter/bomber. The first flight occurred on September 2, 1942, entering service in late April 1944 (Mk.V) with No 3 Squadron RAF and No 486 Squadron (NZ).
One of the most powerful fighters of the war, it was based on the Hawker Typhoon with a laminar flow elliptical-shaped wing. The Tempest’s primary role was armed reconnaissance; its high speed, long range, and heavy armament suited this.
The RAF withdrew the Hawker Tempest from service during the early 1950s. The Tempest VI was the last piston-engined fighter in RAF service. One thousand three hundred ninety-eight airframes were built before production ended.
The two main variants are the Mk V powered by the Napier Sabre H24-cylinder, liquid-cooled piston engine, retaining the chin-mounted radiator. The Mk.II, which used the Bristol Centaurus 18-cylinder, air-cooled radial engine.
The armament consisted of four Hispano cannons wing-mounted and two underwing hardpoints to carry up to 900 kg (2,000 lb) of stores.
