8th SOS “Blackbirds”, USAF
The 8th Special Operations Squadron is a United States Air Force unit stationed at Hurlburt Field, Florida, equipped with the Bell Boeing CV-22 Osprey to support special operations. Founded as the 8th Aero Squadron on June 21, 1917, it is one of the oldest units of the USAF.
The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is an American medium-lift, multi-mission, tiltrotor aircraft. Developed jointly by Boeing and Bell Helicopters, it first flew on March 19, 1989, entering service in 2007 with the United States Marine Corps (USMC). It was designated as the MV-22 with the USMC, CV-22 with the USAF and CMV-22 with the US Navy.
The tiltrotor design allows for the vertical flight capabilities of a helicopter. When airborne, the engine nacelles rotate forward 90 degrees, converting the V-22 into a high-speed, fuel-efficient turboprop aeroplane. In addition, it is entirely shipboard compatible, with a blade folding and wing stowage system.
Composite materials make up 43% of the airframe, rotor blades are also of composites, and copper is laminated to the outer skin panels for lightning protection. The crew consists of two pilots and a crew chief.
Powered by two Rolls-Royce T406-AD-400 turboprop/turboshaft engines mounted on either wingtip, coupled by drive shafts through a central gearbox, powering two three-blade main rotors. The armament consists of a machine gun mounted on the back ramp and one minigun, belly-mounted and remotely controlled.
