Curtiss P-40 Warhawk
The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk is an American single-seat, single-engine monoplane fighter and ground-attack aircraft, designated Tomahawk and Kittyhawk by the British Commonwealth and Soviets. The maiden flight occurred on October 14, 1938; the first combat occurred in North Africa with the British Commonwealth in June 1941. Most Allied air forces used them during World War II and in most theatres of operation except in Western Europe. Production ended in 1944 with some 13,740 airframes built, the third most numerous American fighter of WWII.
The airframe is an all-metal, and it used a single Allison V-1710, a V-12 liquid-cooled piston engine driving a three-bladed propeller. Depending on the model, the armament consisted of two nose-mount machine guns and two in each wing. Later variants had six machine guns in the wings. Three hardpoints could have up to 910 kg (2,000 lb) of stores.
