Sopwith Camel
The Sopwith Camel is a British single-seat, single-engine biplane fighter of WW I. It first flew on December 22, 1916, entering service in June 1917 with No. 4 Squadron Royal Naval Air Service.
The Camel was difficult to fly and dangerous for novice pilots; almost as many were killed in accidents as in combat, but in the hands of a skilled pilot was a superb fighter.
The main variants were:
- F.1: main production variant
- 2F.1: shipboard variant, slightly shorter wingspan and a Bentley BR1 engine as standard
- Comic: night fighter variant.
Five thousand four hundred ninety camels were ordered, but the number delivered is unknown. The Camel retired from the British military in January 1920 after three years of service.
Various power plants were fitted, the most common being the 130hp Clerget. Armament consisted of Twin Vickers machine guns or one centrally mounted and one overhead Foster mounted. Balloon Busters carried one upward-firing machine gun. In the ground attack role, they carried up to four under-fuselage 9 kg (20 lb) bombs.
