Boeing Model 314 Clipper
The Boeing Model 314 Clipper is an American four-engine, long-range flying boat, one of the largest aircraft of its time, able to traverse the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Designed for Pan Am it first flew on June 7, 1938, entering service in January 1939 (Honolulu Clipper). Built for luxury air travel, the hull had lounge and dining areas; seats could be converted into bunks, food prepared by chefs and separate dressing rooms for men and women.
During World War II, the Clippers was pressed into military service, highly valued for their long-range and cargo capacity. After the war, several Clippers were returned to Pan Am but had become obsolete, the last Pan Am 314 “California Clipper” retired in 1946.
Produced in two variants, the 314 Clipper and the 314A, with a more powerful engine. Six of each were produced with nine going to Pan Am and three 314As to British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). Production ended in 1941; no example survives today.
Airframe construction is all metal, mainly aluminium alloy, a semi-monocoque fuselage with a stepped hull and enclosed cockpit and sponsons. The tapered wings and triplefin tail assembly are cantilevered structures. The crew of Eleven consisted of a ship commander, two pilots, flight engineer, radio operator, navigator and relief crew. Cabin seated 40 to 70 passengers.
The Clipper uses four Wright GR-2600 Twin Cyclone 14-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engines, mounted two per wing driving three-bladed Hamilton Standard fully-feathering constant-speed propellers. The Model 314A had a maximum speed of 320 km/h (199 mph), a cruise speed of 294 km/h (183 mph), a service ceiling of 4,800 m (19,600 ft) and a range of 5,930 km (3,685 mi).
