Fokker Dr.I Dreidecker
The Fokker Dr.I Dreidecker is a German single-seat, single-engined triplane fighter. It first flew on July 5, 1917, entering service in October 1917. Developed in response to the Sopwith Triplane it was highly manoeuvrable although slower than contemporary Allied fighters in level flight and a dive. Highly unstable, in capable hands an excellent fighter, but for lesser pilots and students, a death trap. Throughout its service life, the Dreidecker suffered from catastrophic wing failures. Production ended in May 1918 with approximately 320 airframes completed.
The fuselage construction is welded steel tubing wire braced, sides clad in plywood and the entire structure covered with fabric. All three wings are the same basic design and primarily of fabric-covered wood. Control surfaces and tail are fabric-covered welded steel frames. The fixed undercarriage is a tailwheel type.
The Fokker Dr.I used a single Oberursel Ur.II 9-cylinder air-cooled rotary piston engine driving a two-bladed fixed-pitch wooden propeller. The Dr.I a maximum speed of 160 km/h (99 mph), a range of 300 km (190 mi), and a service ceiling of 6,100 m (20,000 ft).
Armament consisted of 7.92 mm (0.312 in) Maschinengewehr 08 “Spandau” machine guns, mounted atop of the nose synchronised to fire through the propellor arc.
