Oxford Diecast 72SW004 History of Flight
Oxford Diecast (History of Flight series) diecast model 72SW004 replicates in 1/72 scale the Supermarine Walrus I in the colour scheme worn during “Operation Torch” in 1942.
Operation Torch
Operation Torch was the code name given to the Allied invasion of French North Africa during the Second World War and took place from the 8th to the 16th of November 1942.
Supermarine Seagull V/Walrus
The Supermarine Supermarine Seagull V, designated as the Walrus in British service, is a British single-engine amphibious biplane reconnaissance aircraft. It first flew on June 22, 1933, entered service in 1935 with the RAAF and remained in service throughout the Second World War. It was designed for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as a fleet spotter able to be catapult-launched from a warship, later employed in sea rescue, target tug, and maritime patrol roles. Production ended in 1944, with 740 airframes built.
The Seagull V/Walrus I hull was a metal structure as wood rapidly deteriorated in tropical conditions. The Walrus II had a wooden hull. The bi-plane wings construction is of stainless–steel spars with wooden ribs and fabric covering. The lower wings are mounted in the shoulder position with a float under each, the wings folded for storage. The retractable undercarriage was a tailwheel type, with the primary units folding up into the lower wing.
It uses a single Pegasus II M2 nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engine in a pusher configuration housed in a nacelle mounted on struts between the wings. It drives a four-bladed, wooden propeller, giving the aircraft a cruise speed of 148 km/h (92 mph), a top speed of 215 km/h (135 mph), a service ceiling of 5,600 m (18,500 ft), and a range of 970 km (600 mi).
Armament typically consisted of a .303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers K machine gun in the nose and rear fuselage. Bombs or depth charges beneath the lower wings.
