Hobby Master HA5810 1/72 Air Power Series
Hobby Master 1/72 Air Power Series HA5810 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the F-117A Nighthawk, “Scorpion 2” serial number 80-10781 of the 410th Test Squadron (410th TS), 412th Test Wing (412th TW), United States Air Force (USAF), with “Toxic Death Graffiti, 1991.
Scorpion 2
In 1991 the second Nighthawk produced, s/n 79-10781 “Scorpion 2”, was retired and moved to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, located at Wright Patterson AFB.
Before delivery to the museum, its highly classified toxic radar absorbent coating was removed. The bare aluminium airframe had “Toxic Death” with skull and crossbones painted on the side in reference to the nasty, arduous process of removing the coating. The “Ray Who?” behind the cockpit reputedly refers to the name of the popular flight test engineer that worked with the Baja Scorpions.
The aircraft was then flown to Wright Patterson, where classified avionics and sensitive body parts were replaced with lookalikes and painted flat black.
Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk
The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is an American twin-engine, single-seat, stealth attack aircraft. The maiden flight took place on June 18, 1981, entering service in October 1983. Developed by Skunk Works, its existence remained secret until 1988. The first combat deployment was in 1989 during “Operation Just Cause,” the invasion of Panama. The USAF retired the F-117 in 2008, with only 64 built.
Nighthawk’s design prioritised stealth over aerodynamics and is so unstable in flight that it requires constant corrections from the fly-by-wire (FBW) flight system. Flat surfaces on the aircraft were due to the limited computer capabilities to calculate radar cross-section. The radar-absorbent material (RAM) exterior coating, Slot-like engine exhausts, and outward slant of the twin tail fins further reduce infrared and radar emissions. It has no navigation or targeting radar; instead, it uses forward-looking infrared (FLIR) and downward-looking infrared (DLIR) with a laser designator.
It uses two General Electric F404 turbofan engines mounted at the rear of the fuselage. Armament excludes guns, two internal weapons bays with one hardpoint each can carry 1814 kg (4000lb) of stores.
