Stanisław Skalski
Stanisław Skalski (1915 – 2004) was WWII’s top-scoring Polish fighter ace, serving with the Polish and later British air forces. In October 1942, Skalski was given command of the Polish Fighting Team ( ‘C’ flight, No. 145 Sqn RAF) and deployed to the North African Theatre of Operations.
Skalski left the RAF in 1945 as a Wing Commander, rejoining the Polish Air Force in 1956 and retiring in 1972 as a Generał brygady. He is credited with 18 11/12 victories and two probable. Awards include the Golden Cross of the Virtuti Militari, Cross of Valour (4), Order of the Cross of Grunwald
DSO, DFCs & Two Bars.
Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX
Developed as a stop-gap measure to counter the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in late 1941, the Spitfire Mk.IX was an Mk Vc airframe modified to take the more powerful Merlin 61 of the Mk VII and VIII, which were still a year away from entering service.
It first flew in April 1942 and became the most numerous variant, remaining in production and service until the end of the War. Manufactured in several sub-variants: the standard Mk IX, a low altitude LF Mk IX (the most produced sub-variant), the high altitude HF Mk IX, unarmed Photo Reconnaissance PR Mk IXs and the FR IXs with a single, port-facing, oblique camera.
The armament consisted of two cannons, two machine guns in the wings, and up to 230 kg (500 lb) of bombs on under-wing racks or the fuselage centre. It uses a single Rolls-Royce Merlin liquid-cooled V-12 piston engine driving a four-bladed Rotol propeller.
