Lockheed P-38 Lightning
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning is an American single-seated, twin-engined monoplane fighter of World War II. It first flew on January 27, 1939, entering service in July 1941, serving in most theatres of operations. Adapted for various combat roles, including fighter-bomber, a night fighter, long-range escort fighter, bomber-pathfinder and aerial reconnaissance roles. The last P-38s in service with the United States Air Force retired in 1949. It was the only American combat aircraft to remain in production throughout America’s participation in World War II. Production ended in 1945 with 10,037 airframes built,
Airframe construction is all-metal, mainly aluminium alloy and some stainless steel. The unusual airframe consists of twin booms, a central nacelle containing the cockpit and armament, a cantilevered wing and a tail assembly consisting of a fin mounted at the rear of each boom with a single tailplane connecting the two. The undercarriage is a retractable tricycle type.
The P-38 uses two Allison V-1710 V-12 liquid-cooled turbo-supercharged piston engines mounted one per boom, driving a counter-rotating, three-bladed constant-speed propeller. The P-38L had a top speed of 666 km/h (414 mph), a cruise speed of 443 km/h (275 mph), a service ceiling of 13,000 m (44,000 ft) and a combat range of 2,100 km (1,100 mi).
The armament consisted of one Hispano M2(C) 20 mm cannon, four M2 Browning 0.50 in (12.7 mm) machine guns in the nose and three-tube M10 bazooka rocket launchers on each side. Underwing hardpoints were able to carry up to 1814 kg (4,000 lb) of stores. The ordinance included assorted bombs, HVARs (High-Velocity Aircraft Rockets) and drop tanks.
