The 121st Fighter Squadron (121 FS) “Capital Guardians” is a District of Columbia Air National Guard 113th Wing unit that operates the Block 30 F-16C/D Fighting Falcon. Established on July 10, 1940, as the 121st Observation Squadron, redesignated the 121st Fighter Squadron in 1993 and has operated the F-16 since 1989.
Washington, DC, has no air force runway facilities, DC ANG units are stationed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon
The F-16 Fighting Falcon is an American single-engine, single-seat all-weather multi-role jet fighter that first flew on December 8, 1976, entering service in January 1979.
Features of the F-16 include a frameless bubble canopy side-mounted control stick, an ejection seat reclined 30 degrees from vertical and the first use of a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire flight control system. Block numbers designate upgrades. It serves 25 countries, produced in the USA, Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey, and Korea.
The F-16 uses a single General Electric F110 or Pratt & Whitney F100 after-burning turbofan axial flow jet engine mounted in the fuselage. The armament consists of one cannon. Eleven external hardpoints can carry up to 7,700 kg (17,000 lb) of stores.
General Dynamics aircraft became part of Lockheed in 1993, renamed Lockheed Martin in 1995 after a merger with Martin Marietta.
