Hobby Master HL9018 1/200 Airliner Series
Hobby Master 1/200 Airliner Series HL9018 replicates in 1/200 scale diecast the EC-121R BatCat serial 67-21498. Of the 553rd Reconnaissance Squadron (553rd RS), 553rd Reconnaissance Wing (553rd RW), United States Air Force (USAF). Based at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, December 1970.
Electronic Fence
Established in 1967 as an electronic warfare squadron of the USAF and deployed to Thailand to detect vehicles along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Indochina.
As part of the “electronic fence” concept, Navy sonobuoys were air-dropped along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, 553d RW EC-121R aircraft picked up the signals relaying them to the Infiltration Center at Nakhon Phanom.
Lockheed EC-121K Constellation
The EC-121K (WV-2) Warning Star, a military version of the L1049 Super Constellation, is an American four-engine, airborne early warning and control aircraft. It first flew on June 9, 1949, entering service in 1954. Many underwent modification for specialised missions.
The main variants were:
- EC-121R “BatCat”: equipped to process signals from seismic instruments.
- NC-121K: special mission aircraft
- EC-121M/ WV-2Q: ELINT collection variant
- WC-121N/WV-3: weather reconnaissance variant
- EC-121P: anti-submarine variant
Production ended in 1958 with 332 airframes completed. The US Navy retired their last examples in 1982, and The USAF in 1978.
The flight crew varied, but usually 18: two pilots, two navigators, two weapons controllers, two flight engineers, one radio operator, two crew chiefs, five radar operators, and two radar technicians.
The EC-121K uses four Wright R-3350 turbo compound, supercharged, air-cooled 18 cylinders, twin-row, radial engines mounted two per wing, driving three-bladed constant-speed propellers.
