EC-121K Warning Star S/N 137890
EC-121K S/N 137890 was delivered to the US Navy in March 1955, assigned to NAS Point Mugu, California’s Pacific Missile Range (PMR), and used as a down-range missile tracker until May 1979, when it was stored. In October 1985, it moved to Tinker AFB, Oklahoma and was displayed as 53-0552.
Lockheed EC-121 Constellation
The EC-121K (WV-2) Warning Star, a military version of the L1049 Super Constellation, is an American four-engine, airborne early warning and control aircraft. It first flew on June 9, 1949, entering service in 1954.
The United States Navy’s original designation was PO-2W until 1952 when it changed to WV-2 and in 1962 to EC-121K. The United States Air Force’s original designation was RC-121C, changed to EC-121 in 1962. Production ended in 1958 with 232 airframes completed. The US Navy retired their last examples in 1982, and The USAF in 1978.
The airframe features massive radomes above and below the fuselage behind the wing. The flight crew varied, but usually 18: two pilots, two navigators, two weapons controllers, two flight engineers, one radio operator, two crew chiefs, five radar operators, and two radar technicians.
The EC-121K uses four Wright R-3350 turbo compound, supercharged, air-cooled 18 cylinders, twin-row, radial engines mounted two per wing, driving three-bladed constant-speed propellers.
