Hobby Master HL2023 1/200 Airliner Series
Hobby Master 1/200 Airliner Series HA2023 replicates in 1/200 scale diecast the DC-4 (built as a C-47E) registration N88886, named “Clipper Mandarin” in Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) livery, circa the late 1950s
Pan Am
Pan American World Airways, commonly known as Pan Am, was a prominent American international airline and the first with scheduled around-the-world flights. Founded on March 14, 1927, as Pan American Airways, by Carl A. Spaatz, Air Corps Majors Henry H. “Hap” Arnold and John H. Jouett.
The airline started using Pan American World Airways in 1943, formally changing in 1950.
The airline used “Clipper” in all aircraft names and call signs. Declare bankrupt ceased operations on December 4, 1991, with Delta Air Lines purchasing profitable assets.
Douglas DC-4
The Douglas Aircraft Company DC-4 is an American four-engine airliner. It first flew in February 1942, but with the outbreak of World War II, all production went to the US Military. Entering airline service post-war, it was popular and reliable.
Designated C-54 Skymaster with the USAAF and R5D with the US Navy remained in military service into the 1960s. The North Star, a Canadian development based on the DC-4, designed in the 1940s, used Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. The Aviation Traders ATL-98 Carvair was a Douglas DC-4-based air ferry that could carry 25 passengers and five cars. Production of the DC-4 ended in 1947 with 1245 airframes built.
The flight crew typically consists of six: two pilots, a radio operator, a navigator, and two relief crew. The passenger cabin seats 86 or 9,980 kg (22,002 lb) of cargo.
The DC-4 uses four Pratt & Whitney R-2000 Twin Wasp 14-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engines, mounted two per wing, driving three-bladed Hamilton-Standard Hydromatic, constant-speed propellers.
