Hobby Master 1/72 Air Power Series HH1014 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the Bell UH-1C Iroquois (nickname: Huey) serial number 66-15045, named “Easy Rider” of the 174th Assault Helicopter Company (174th AHC) ” Sharks”, United States Army (US Army), Duc Pho, Vietnam, 1970.
UH-1C is a UH-1B with an improved performance for the gunship role.
174th AHC, US Army
The 174th Assault Helicopter Company was formed in October 1965 with two airlift platoons (Dolphins), each with eight UH-1Ds, and one armed’ escort platoon, “Sharks”, with eight UH-Cs. The company deployed to Vietnam in April 1966 until deactivated in September 1971.
Bell UH-1 Iroquois
The UH-1 Iroquois, nicknamed “Huey”, is a family of American utility helicopters and the first turbine-powered helicopter to serve with the United States military.
Manufactured by Bell Helicopter, the maiden flight, a Bell 204 (military designation: UH-1A), occurred on October 20, 1956. A stretched version, the UH-1D (Bell 205) first flew in August 1961. A twin-engined model, the UH-1N Twin Huey, was developed in the late 1960s.
Their first use in combat was the Vietnam War, where it was adapted for various purposes, including general transport, air assault, medivac, search and rescue, electronic warfare, and gunship.
The HU-1 has served or is serving with numerous countries and was manufactured under license in Italy, Germany, Japan and Taiwan. Approximately 16,000 airframes were manufactured before production ended in 1987.
The crew consisted of two pilots and two door gunners and could carry 1,760 kg (3,880 lb) of payload or up to 14 troops subject to the model. Depending on the variant, it uses one or two Lycoming T53 turboshaft engines or General Electric T58. The armament consisted of machine guns, rocket pods and grenade launchers.
