Grumman F4F Wildcat
The F4F Wildcat is an American single-seat, single-engine, monoplane carrier-capable fighter. General Motors also produced the F4F as the FM. The maiden flight took place on September 2, 1937, entering service in December 1940, and the first combat occurred with the British Navy. (designated as the Martlet). The Mitsubishi A6M Zero outperformed the Wildcat. But the F4F’s capacity to absorb damage, heavy armour, self-sealing fuel tanks and tactics helped counter the lesser performance. The Wildcat remained in front-line service throughout the war; later, on escort carriers, unsuited to the newer, larger fighters. Production ended in 1945 with 7,898 airframes built.
The F4F uses a single Pratt & Whitney R-1830 14-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engine driving a 3-bladed constant-speed propeller. Armament consists of four or six machine guns wing-mounted, depending on the variant, 2 100 lb (45.4 kg) stores on underwing racks.
