Eino Ilmari “Illu” Juutilainen
Eino Ilmari “Illu” Juutilainen (1914 – 1999) was a Finnish air force ace of World War II and the highest scoring non-german. Juutilainen saw active service during the Winter and Continuation Wars and World War II. Credited with 94 confirmed aerial victories, he retired with the rank of Sergeant Major (he declined a commission). One of the four double recipients of the Mannerheim Cross 2nd Class; other awards include the Cross of Liberty 3rd Class with Oak Leaves and Swords and the Iron Cross 1st Class.
Messerschmitt Bf 109
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is a German single-seat, single-engine fighter, one of the most advanced fighters when introduced. It first flew on May 29, 1935, and first saw combat with the “Condor Legion” during the Spanish Civil War. The Bf 109 achieved more aerial victories than any other type of World War II. The Luftwaffe withdrew its last Bf 109s from service in May 1945; it remained with the Spanish Air Force until December 1965. Several allies operated the Bf 109 during the war; postwar, manufactured in Czechoslovakia, Spain and Switzerland.
Advanced features for the time were an all-metal airframe, an enclosed cockpit and retractable landing gear. The Junkers Jumo 210 powered most pre-war variants, later the Daimler-Benz DB 601 and DB 605. All were liquid-cooled inverted V12 engines.
The armament consisted of two machine guns mounted in the engine cowling atop the engine and a single cannon firing through a blast tube between the engine cylinder banks, known as a Motorkanone. The first with wing-mounted guns was the C-1, with one each wing. Later variants could carry two field-installed under-wing cannon pods and ordinance racks.
