John Arthur Houlton
John Arthur Houlton (1922 – 1996) was a WWII ace of the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) credited with at least five aerial victories. He remained in the RNAF until 1951, retiring with the rank of Squadron Leader and being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC).
Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX
Developed as a stop-gap measure to counter the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in late 1941, the Spitfire Mk.IX was an Mk Vc airframe modified to take the more powerful Merlin 61 of the Mk VII and VIII, which were still a year away from entering service. It first flew in April 1942 and became the most numerous variant, remaining in production and service until the end of the War. Manufactured in several sub-variants: the standard Mk IX, a low altitude LF Mk IX (the most produced sub-variant), the high altitude HF Mk IX, unarmed Photo Reconnaissance PR Mk IXs, and the FR IXs with a single, port-facing, oblique camera. The armament consisted of two cannons, two machine guns in the wings, and up to 230 kg (500 lb) of bombs on under-wing racks or the fuselage centre. It uses a single Rolls-Royce Merlin liquid-cooled V-12 piston engine driving a four-bladed Rotol propeller.
