Vought F4U Corsair
The Chance Vought F4U Corsair is an American single-seat, single-engine, carrier-capable monoplane fighter. It first flew on May 29, 1940, entering service in December 1942, taking part in combat during World War II, the Korean War, and French Indochina and Algeria colonial wars. Although poor forward visibility initially limited deployment to land-based squadrons, the Corsair became one of WWII’s most successful naval fighters.
Goodyear (designated FG) and Brewster (F3A-1 and F3A-1D) also manufactured the Corsair. Production ended in 1953 with 12,571 airframes produced in 16 variants, including a radar-equipped night fighter and ground attack.
It uses a single Pratt & Whitney R-2800 twin-row, 18-cylinder, air-cooled radial engine driving a Hamilton Standard three-blade propeller; the F4U-4 uses a four-blade propeller. Armaments consist of six machine guns or four cannons and wing-mounted and underwing hardpoints for stores of 1,800 kg (4,000 lbs).
