Hobby Master HA7115 1/48 Air Power Series
Hobby Master 1/48 Air Power Series HA7115 replicates the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XIVc serial number RM787/CG in 1/48 scale diecast. It was flown by Wing Commander (Wg Cdr) Colin Gray, Lympne Wing, Royal Air Force (RAF) Lympne, Kent, England, in October 1944.
Colin Gray
Colin Falkland Gray (1914–1995), DSO, DFC & Two Bars, was a New Zealand-born RAF flying ace of the Second World War. He was credited with 27 confirmed aerial victories: two shared, ten probables and 12 damaged. He was New Zealand’s highest-scoring ace of the war. He retired from the RAF in 1961 as a Group Captain.
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XIV
The Spitfire Mk.XIV was a British single-engine, single-seat, short-range, medium to high-altitude fighter reconnaissance aircraft.
It used the Mk. VIII airframe with an extended nose to house the Griffon engine, a five-bladed propeller, a bigger fin and rudder and other minor changes. Later, production had cut-back fuselage, tear-drop canopies, and the E-Type wing.
It first flew in January 1943, entering service in December 1943 with 610 Squadron. With a top speed of over 640 kph (400 mph), it was used to intercept V1 flying bombs and later the Me 262 jet fighter. 957 Mk XIVs were built.
Early production armament consisted of four 0.303 in machine guns and two cannons, two machine guns wing-mounted and later with the “E” wing, two 0.50 in machine guns and two cannons.
It uses a single Rolls-Royce Griffon supercharged liquid-cooled V-12 piston engine driving a five-bladed Rotol propeller.
