Hobby Master HA5811 1/72 Air Power Series
Hobby Master 1/72 Air Power Series HA5811 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the F-117A Nighthawk, serial number 84-0828, tail code TR with “40 Years of Owning the Night” tail logo “Dark Knights”, USAF, 2022 Sentry Savannah exercise.
Dark Knights
With the retirement of the F-117A Nighthawk in 2008, the US Air Force kept a small number operational, their role unknown, at the Tonopah Test Range (NTTR). At the 2022 Air National Guard’s “Sentry Savannah” exercise, Nighthawk s/n 84-0828, along with the ‘TR’ tail code, exhibits 40 years of F-117 operations logo on both tails. Markings seen on another aircraft suggest that the Tonopah-based F-117 unit could be named the “Dark Knights”.
Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk
The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is an American twin-engine, single-seat, stealth attack aircraft. The maiden flight took place on June 18, 1981, entering service in October 1983. Developed by Skunk Works, its existence remained secret until 1988. The first combat deployment was in 1989 during “Operation Just Cause,” the invasion of Panama. The USAF retired the F-117 in 2008, with only 64 built.
Nighthawk’s design prioritised stealth over aerodynamics and is so unstable in flight that it requires constant corrections from the fly-by-wire (FBW) flight system. Flat surfaces on the aircraft were due to the limited computer capabilities to calculate radar cross-section. The radar-absorbent material (RAM) exterior coating, Slot-like engine exhausts, and outward slant of the twin tail fins further reduce infrared and radar emissions. It has no navigation or targeting radar; instead, it uses forward-looking infrared (FLIR) and downward-looking infrared (DLIR) with a laser designator.
It uses two General Electric F404 turbofan engines mounted at the rear of the fuselage. Armament excludes guns, two internal weapons bays with one hardpoint each can carry 1814 kg (4000lb) of stores.
