VAW-113 “Black Eagles”
Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 113 (VAW-113) “Black Eagles” is a unit of the US Navy. It was established on April 20, 1967, flying the E-2A Hawkeye. The squadron served in the Vietnam War, Operations Desert Shield, Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
In 2020, the squadron was redesignated Airborne Command & Control Squadron and is currently home-based at Naval Base Ventura County, California, USA, part of CVW-2 and deploys aboard the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70)
Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye
The E-2 Hawkeye is an American twin-engine, all-weather, carrier-capable, tactical airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft. The first aircraft created solely for the AEW mission and capable of civil and military air traffic control. Designed for the US Navy, it features a 7.3 m (24ft) diameter rotating radar dome mounted above the fuselage housing the radar and IFF systems antennas. It first flew on October 21, 1960, entering service in January 1964, making its combat debut during the Vietnam War.
Other operators of the Hawkeye include Egypt, France, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Singapore and Taiwan.
The crew of five consists of a pilot, co-pilot, combat information centre officer, air control officer and radar operator. The E-2C uses two Allison/Rolls-Royce T56 turboprop engines, wing-mounted, driving four-bladed propellers from 2004, NP2000 eight-bladed digitally controlled propellers.
