Hobby Master HA7210B 1/48 Air Power Series
Hobby Master 1/48 Air Power Series HA7210B replicates the Grumman F9F-5 Panther BuNo 125459 tail code D/106 in 1/48 scale diecast. It was flown by Lt Royce Williams of VF-781 “Pacemakers”, US Navy, when he downed four MiG-15s on November 18, 1952.
Royce Williams
Lieutenant Royce Williams (1945-) with VF-781 deployed to Korea from September 15, 1952, to May 18, 1953, with Carrier Air Group 102 (CVG-102) aboard the USS Oriskany (CVA-34). On November 18, 1952, while flying F9F-5 tail code D/106, he found himself alone, facing seven Soviet MiG-15s.
The resulting melee lasted 35 minutes (believed to be the longest in US Navy history). Williams shot down four of the MiGs and likely hit two more. Soviet records show that only one returned to base. As the Soviet Union was not officially a combatant of the war, authorities, anxious not to increase Soviet involvement in the conflict, covered up the specifics of the battle.
Williams went on to fly missions in Vietnam, retiring from the Navy in 1980 with the rank of Captain. Awards included the Navy Cross, DFC (2), BSM, AM (11) and LOM with Combat V.

Grumman F9F Panther
The Grumman F9F Panther is an American single-seat, single-engine, carrier-capable fighter and ground attack aircraft.
The maiden flight took place on November 21, 1947, entering service in 1949 with VF-51 “Screaming Eagles”, US Navy. The Panther first saw combat during the Korean War on July 3, 1950. Production ended in 1951 with 1385 airframes built.
By 1956, the US Navy and Marines had withdrawn the Panther from front-line service, but it remained in training roles until 1958. Argentinian, the only other operator of the type, retired their last examples in 1960.
The F9F uses a single Pratt & Whitney J42 (F9F-2/4), later the J48 (F9F-5). The F9F-3 initially used the General Electric/Allison J33 but changed to the J-42. All were centrifugal-flow turbojet engines.
The armament consisted of four cannons, mounted internally in the lower nose, with eight underwing hardpoints, four per wing, carrying up to 900 kg (2,000 lb) of stores.
