Hobby Master HA3558 1/72 Air Power Series
Hobby Master 1/72 Air Power Series HA3558 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the F/A-18A Hornet s/n A21-39 of No. 77 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in a unique colour scheme to celebrate 33 years of legacy Hornet operations with 77 Sqn in 2020.
33 years of Legacy Hornet
As part of No. 77 Sqns celebrations of 33 years of F/A-18A operations in 2020, Hornet A21-39 received a unique paint scheme. Dark green paint to the spine with black silhouettes of aircraft previously operated. The twin fins are also green and display the words “1987-2020 33 Years Hornet” in white lettering on the outer sides and the oriental temple lion of the squadron’s crest on the inner sides. 77 Squadron ceased flying operations with the type on December 11, 2020, in preparation for conversion to the F-35 Lightning II.
McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Classic Hornet
The F/A-18 Hornet is an American carrier-capable, all-weather multi-role fighter. The first flight occurred on November 18, 1978, entering operational service in January 1983 with VMFA-314. It was developed from the YF-17 by Northrop in partnership with McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing), who purchased Northrop’s interests in 1985.
The main variants were the single-seat F/A-18A and upgraded F/A-18C; the tandem-seat -B and upgraded -D are either trainers or all-weather strike aircraft. Production ended in 2,000 with 1,480 airframes built.
The F/A-18 uses two General Electric F404-GE-402 after-burning turbofan engines. The armament consists of a single internal nose-mounted cannon. With nine external hardpoints, able to carry up to 6,200 kg (13,700 lb) of payload,
