Douglas B-26K (A-26A) Counter Invader
The B-26K (A26A) Counter Invader was an American twin-engine, light bomber and attack aircraft used for ground-attack missions along the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the Vietnam War. Pilots were known as “Nimrods”.
The first flight occurred on January 28, 1963. Redesignated A-26As in Southeast Asia because Thailand resisted bombers based in their territory. They remained in Southeast Asia until retirement from the USAF in 1969 due to airframe fatigue.
Forty airframes were converted to the B-26K standard by On Mark Engineering, who had experience converting the A-26 for civilian use. The B-26K had wing guns and turrets removed, more powerful engines, a rebuilt fuselage and larger tail, strengthened wings, wing-tip fuel tanks and modernised cockpit and avionics.
Powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 “Double Wasp” 18-cylinder air-cooled two-row radial piston engines driving three-bladed fully-reversible automatic feathering propellers.
Armament consisted of eight nose guns and munitions in eight underwing hardpoints (3,629 kg: 8,000 lb), internally (1,814 kg: 4,000 lb).
