Hobby Master HA3031 1/72 Air Power Series
Hobby Master 1/72 Air Power Series HA3031 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the F-111A Aardvark serial number 66-0022, Det 1, 428th TFS, USAF, during operation “Combat Lancer”, Ta Khli Royal Thai Air Base, 1968.
Combat Lancer
In March 1968, the USAF sent six F-111As from Det 1, 428th Tactical Fighter Squadron, to Thailand for operational tests, code name “Combat Lancer”.
Over Vietnam, it proved successful in single aircraft precision strikes at night or in poor weather at low altitudes. But by the end of April, losing three aircraft and a fourth in similar circumstances at Nellis AFB in May ended combat testing. F-111A s/n 66-0022 was the first lost.
A malfunction of an actuating valve in the stabilator system was blamed for the losses, and they returned to Nellis in September. The F-111As returned to Vietnam in 1972 with great success.
General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark
The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark is an American two-seat, twin-engined, supersonic, all-weather, medium-range interdiction, and tactical strike aircraft. Later, it was adapted for aerial reconnaissance and electronic warfare.
Developed for the USAF (F-111A) and US Navy (F-111B), the Navy opted out of the program in 1968. Production ended in 1981, with 563 airframes built.
Features of the F-111 were: pilot and weapon systems officer sat side by side in an escape capsule, terrain-following radar connected to the autopilot and variable-sweep wings.
It uses two Pratt & Whitney TF30 after-burning axial-flow turbofan engines. The armament consists of a single cannon in the weapons bay. Nine external hardpoints, plus two in the weapons bay carrying up to 14,300 kg (31,500 lb) of stores.
