Hobby Master 1/72 Air Power Series HA2215 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the Curtiss SB2C-3 Helldiver “White 62 ” of Bombing Squadron 18 (VB-18) “Sunday Punches” while deployed with Carrier Air Group 18 (CVG-18) aboard the USS Intrepid (CV-11), part of Fast Carrier Task Force 38 (TF38), Battle of Leyte Gulf, April 1945.
Battle of Leyte Gulf
The Battle of Leyte Gulf lasted from 23 to October 26 1944, and was the largest naval battle of World War II. It was fought near the Philippine islands of Leyte, Samar, and Luzon between combined American and Australian forces and the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Allied victory led to the reoccupation of the Philippines, cutting Japan off from its occupied territories in Southeast Asia and their vital resources.
Curtiss SB2C Helldiver
The SB2C Helldiver, also known as the A-25 Shrike, is an American tandem-seat, carrier-capable dive bomber used by the United States Navy in Pacific theatres during World War II. It first flew on December 18, 1940, entering service in December 1942.
Poor handling characteristics and late modifications caused lengthy delays in production and deployment. They were never fully addressed until the introduction of the improved SB2C-4 (late 1944) and -5 (early 1945), by which time Allied air forces had abandoned dedicated dive-bombers. Production ended in 1945 with 7140 airframes built.
The Helldiver remained in the US Navy and Marine Corps service until 1950 and the French Navy until 1958. Its last combat was with the French in the First Indochina War (1951-1954).
It uses a single 1,400 kW (1,900 hp) Wright R-2600-20 Twin Cyclone 14-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engine driving a 4-bladed constant-speed propeller. It had a crew of two: a pilot and a rear gunner.
The armament comprises two wing-mounted cannons and two machine guns in the rear cockpit. Two underwing hardpoints carry up to 230 kg (500 lb) of stores, and an internal bomb bay has a capacity of 910 kg (2,000 lb).
