Douglas A-4 Skyhawk
The A-4 Skyhawk is an American single-seat, delta-winged, single turbojet, subsonic carrier-capable light attack aircraft. It first flew on June 22, 1954, entering service in 1956.
Skyhawks were the US Navy’s primary light attack aircraft over North Vietnam during the early years of the Vietnam War. They were used in the training role until replaced by the T-45 Goshawk and were popular with Aggressor Squadrons in Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT).
The US Navy began removing aircraft from frontline squadrons in 1967, although training and adversary aircraft continued well into the 1990s. Production ended in 1979, with 2,960 airframes built.
The A-4 uses a single Pratt & Whitney J52 axial-flow turbojet engine mounted in the rear of the fuselage. The armament consists of two cannons and five external hard points to carry up to 3,629kg (8,001 lb) of stores.
