Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21
The MiG-21 (NATO reporting name: Fishbed) is a Soviet single-seat, single-engine, lightweight supersonic fighter-interceptor. The first flight occurred on February 15, 1956, entering service in 1959. The two-seat trainers received the NATO reporting name: “Mongol”.
It first saw combat during the 1965 Indian-Pakistan war with the Indian Air Force (IAF). The MiG-21 was used by North Vietnam, which successfully faced more advanced US fighters.
The MiG-21, the most numerous produced supersonic jet fighter of all time, was made under license in Czechoslovakia, India, and China reverse-engineered it as the Chengdu J-7/F-7. It has served over 60 countries and remains in service with many. In addition, Russian, Israeli and Romanian companies offer avionic and armament upgrades.
It uses a single Tumanskiy R25 axial flow after-burning turbojet engine mounted in the rear of the fuselage. The armament comprises one internal cannon and five external hardpoints carrying up to 2,000 kg (4,400 lbs) of stores.
