Qantas Airways
Qantas Airways is the largest by fleet size Australian airline, operating both national and international routes. The airline started in November 1920 as Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited flying the Avro 504K and is the third oldest airline globally. The Qantas name comes from an acronym of its original name. In 1934, Qantas and Britain’s Imperial Airways established Qantas Empire Airways Limited (QEA). In 1967 the name changed to Qantas Airways Limited. Subsidiary airlines are Jetstar, QantasLink and Qantas Freight.
Boeing 787 Dreamliner
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is an American wide-body, twin-engine long-haul jet airliner, the first airliner constructed mainly of composite materials. The maiden flight took place on December 15, 2009, entering service on October 26, 2011, with All Nippon Airways. The stretched 787-9 first flew on September 2013, starting service on August 7, 2014, again with All Nippon Airways. In early service, the aircraft had several problems with its lithium-ion batteries, including fires.
The airframe structure by weight is 50% composite, 20% aluminium, and titanium and steel. The fuselage is a semi-monocoque design with cantilevered low mounted sweep back wings and raked wingtips. The cantilevered tail unit is a conventional swept design with a single fin and tailplanes. The retractable undercarriage is a tricycle type with the primary units mounted in the wing root, folding inwards into the fuselage; the steerable nose wheel retracts forward. The flight crew consists of two pilots with a passenger cabin that seats 242 to 335 passengers in a typical three-class layout, depending on the variant.
Powered by two General Electric GEnx-1B or Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 high-bypass turbofan engines, pod mounted one under each wing with noise-reducing serrated edges (chevrons) nacelles. Giving the B787-9 a cruise speed of 903 km/h (561 mph), a maximum speed of 956 km/h (594 mph), a 13,100 m (43,000 ft) service ceiling and a range of 14,140 km (8,786 mi).
