Lufthansa Farewells MD-11

Lufthansa Cargo retired its last MD-11F, Registration D-ALCC, on October 17, 2021. To commemorate the occasion, the fuselage carried “Thank you MD-11” and “Goodbye” messages. The final flight was from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Frankfurt. This is the last aircraft of this model registered in Europe. Over the 23 years of operating the type, Lufthansa employed 19 MD-11Fs.

McDonnell Douglas MD-11

The MD-11 is an American long-range, wide-body trijet airliner, an extended version of the DC-10. It made its maiden flight on January 10, 1990, and entered service with Finnair on December 10, 1990.

Several variants of the MD-11 were produced, including the MD-11, -C (Combi), -ER (Extended Range), and -F (Freighter). Production of the MD-11 ended in 2000, with 200 airframes built. The passenger variants were largely withdrawn from service by early 2004, but the freighter versions continued to operate.

The cockpit crew comprises two pilots, and the passenger cabin can accommodate up to 298 in three classes.

The MD-11 is powered by three engines: either General Electric CF6 engines or Pratt & Whitney high-bypass axial-flow turbofan engines. One engine is mounted under each wing, and the third is positioned atop the rear of the fuselage, beneath the vertical fin.
