Sukhoi Su-24
The Sukhoi Su-24 (NATO reporting name: Fencer) is a Russian two-seat, twin-engined variable-sweep wing, supersonic, low-level all-weather attack and reconnaissance aircraft.
The type first flew on January 17, 1970, and entered service on February 4, 1975. It first saw combat during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. Production ended in 1993, with about 1,400 airframes of all variants built. The Su-24 is still in service with Russia and several other air forces.
Airframe construction is mainly aluminium alloy, some titanium and magnesium alloys with a semi-monocoque fuselage with the two engines mounted side by side in the rear. The variable-sweep wings are shoulder-mounted with a conventional swept tail unit, single fin, all-moving tailplanes, and two fixed ventral fins. It has a retractable tricycle type undercarriage.
The pilot and navigator/weapon systems officer (NWSO) sit side-by-side in a pressurised cockpit. Advanced avionics had an integrated digital navigation/attack system with terrain-following radar coupled to an autopilot.
Powered by two Lyulka AL-21 is an axial-flow turbojet engine, the Su-24 has a maximum speed of 2,316 km/h (1,439 mph), a 17,500 m (57,415 ft) service ceiling, a combat range of 560 km (350 mi) without drop tanks and 1,250 km (775 mi) with drop tanks.
Armament consists of a single 23 mm Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-6-23M cannon mounted in a fairing under the right side of a fuselage. With eight external hard-points, able to carry up to 8,000 kg (17,635 lb) of payload, two under each wing, four under-fuselage. Ordnance included air-to-air, air-to-surface, anti-shipping and anti-radiation missiles, guided and unguided bombs, rockets, mission-specific pods, and drop tanks.
