The KC-46 is an American twin-engine, wide-body aircraft for aerial refuelling and strategic transport. Its first flight took place on September 25, 2015, and the initial delivery to the United States Air Force (USAF) occurred in January 2019. The USAF plans to acquire 179 KC-46 airframes by 2027.
Developed from the B767 airliner, the KC-46 is intended to replace the older KC-135 Stratotanker fleet. It is equipped for in-flight refuelling missions and features a fly-by-wire refuelling boom, hose, drogue systems mounted on each wingtip, and an additional system located under the fuselage.
The flight crew includes pilots and a boom operator, with 15 permanent seats available for additional or optional crew members, such as those involved in aeromedical evacuation. The aircraft is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW4000 high-bypass turbofan engines mounted in pods under each wing.
