DHC-1 Chipmunk
The DHC-1 Chipmunk is a single-engine tandem-seat monoplane primary trainer—the first aircraft designed and built by de Havilland Canada. The first flight occurred in May 1946, entering service the following year.
It became the standard primary trainer for the Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Air Force, replacing the de Havilland DH82 Tiger Moth.
Retired from the Canadian military by 1971 and the RAF at the end of the 1970s, except for The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which still operates the last Chipmunks in RAF service.
The Chipmunk became a popular civilian aircraft, used as trainers, glider tugs and agricultural aircraft.
The Chipmunk used the de Havilland Gipsy Major series of inverted inline piston engines.
