ATR
Aerei da Trasporto Regionale or Avions de transport régional (ATR; Regional Transport Airplanes) formed in 1981 as a joint venture Aérospatiale of France (now Airbus) and Aeritalia (now Leonardo) of Italy headquartered in Blagnac, France. The company’s main products are ATR 42 and ATR 72.
ATR 42
The ATR 42 is a European twin-engine turboprop, short-haul regional airliner. It also serves as a corporate transport, freighter and maritime patrol aircraft. It first flew on August 16, 1984, entering service one year later with Air Littoral.
ATR (Avions de transport régional or Aerei da Trasporto Regional) is a joint venture between Airbus and the Italian company Leonardo S.p.A.
The ATR 42 and the larger ATR 72 share a production line along with subsystems and components. The standard aircraft does not have an auxiliary power unit (APU); instead, a brake applied to the starboard propeller allows the engine to function as an APU.
Construction is mainly of metal with 19% composite materials including carbon fibre, Nomex sandwich and Kevlar. The fuselage is a semi-monocoque construction with shoulder-mounted cantilevered tapered wings, retractable tricycle undercarriage and T-tail. The flight crew consists of two pilots and seats up to 48 passengers.
It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW100 turboprop engines, one under each wing, driving four or six-bladed Hamilton Standard propellers. They give the ATR 42-600 a cruise speed of 500 km/h (311 mph), a service ceiling of 7,600m (25,000 ft) and a range of 1,470 km (913 mi).
