Corgi AA39504 Aviation Archive
Corgi Aviation Archive series AA39504 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the Stirling Mk.III of s/n LJ542, named “The Gremlin Teaser”, No. 199 Squadron (radar countermeasures), Royal Air Force (RAF), stationed at RAF North Creake 1944.
No. 199 Sqn, RAF
No. 199 Squadron was an RAF radar countermeasure unit of WWII and later in the 1950s. It formed in June 1917 and in May 1944, equipped with the Short Stirling, moved to No. 100 (Radio Countermeasures) Group, tasked with radar jamming operations on D-Day and supporting bomber raids.
Short Stirling
The Short Stirling was a British four-engined heavy bomber of WWII and the RAFs first four-engined bomber. The maiden flight occurred on May 14 1939, entering service in January 1941 with No. 7 Squadron, RAF.
Popular with its crews, dubbed “fighter bomber” with its manoeuvrability and rugged construction, but a low operational ceiling ((5,000 m, 16,500 ft) due to the thick wing made the Stirling excessively vulnerable to anti-aircraft fire.
By early 1944, withdrawn as a bomber, it continued in the mine-laying, electronic countermeasures, agent/supply drops missions over Europe, and as a transport and glider tug. The RAF withdrew their last examples from service in 1946. Production ended in 1945 with 2,371 airframes built.
The seven crew consisted of two pilots, a flight engineer, a navigator/bomb aimer, a nose gunner/WT operator and two air gunners.
The Stirling used four Bristol Hercules 14-cylinder air-cooled sleeve-valve radial piston engines driving three-bladed metal fully feathering constant-speed propellers. The armament consisted of eight machine guns: two in a nose turret, four in a tail turret, and two in the dorsal turret. It could carry 6,350 kg (4,000 lb) of bombs internally.
