SPAD S.XIII
The SPAD S.XIII is a French single-seat, single-engine biplane fighter that first flew on April 4, 1917, entering service in May 1917—built by Société Pour L’Aviation et ses Dérivés (SPAD), based on the S.VII. It was one of the most capable fighters of World War I.
Operated by the Aéronautique Militaire and purchased in large numbers by the United States Army Air Service (USAAS). Other wartime operators were England, Belgium and Italy. The war ended with 8,472 airframes built and sold post-war to Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Japan, Poland, and civil operators.
The airframe is made of wood with a fabric covering and uses a single Hispano-Suiza 8 water-cooled V8 piston engine driving a two-bladed wooden propeller. The armament consists of two machine guns mounted atop the fuselage nose.
