Corgi AA37811 Aviation Archive
Corgi Aviation Archive series AA37811 replicates in 1/48 scale diecast the Albatros D.V as flown by German ace Otto Kissenberth of Jagdstaffel 23 (Hunting Squadron 23: Jasta 23), Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte (WWI German air force), France, late 1917.
Otto Kissenberth
Otto Kissenberth (1893 – 1919) was a German flying ace of World War I who commanded Jagdstaffel 23 from August 1917 until May 1918, when he crashed and was seriously injured, not to fly again.
Otto Kissenberth ended the war with the rank of Oberleutnant, twenty confirmed victories, and was awarded the Iron Cross 1st class.
Albatros D.V
The Albatros D.V, the final variant of the Albatros D.I. family, is a German single-seat open cockpit, single-engine biplane fighter of WWI. The maiden flight occurred in April 1917, entering service in May 1917. Built by Albatros, Flugzeugwerke, like its predecessors, suffered in-flight structural failures, forcing the development of the stronger D.Va. Production ended in April 1918 with approximately 900 D.V. and 1,612 D.Va built. It remained in operational service until the end of the war and served with the Polish air force post-war.
The elliptical cross-section fuselage structure is primarily moulded plywood with a light wooden framework with an open cockpit. The wire-braced wings and cantilevered tail are of wood and fabric construction. Flight control surfaces are steel tube frames and fabric.
It used a single Mercedes D.III, a liquid-cooled, inline six-cylinder engine driving a two-bladed wooden propeller. The armament consisted of two 7.92mm Spandau LMG 08/15 machine guns mounted atop the fuselage nose, synchronised to fire through the propeller arc.
