Corgi AA37710 Aviation Archive
Corgi Aviation Archive series AA37710 replicates in 1/48 scale diecast the S.E.5a of serial number A8898. Assigned to Captian Albert Ball of No. 56 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps (RFC), France, May 1917.
Albert Ball
Albert Ball (1896 – 1917) was an RFC fighter ace of WWI, and at the time of his death, the United Kingdom’s leading flying ace, with 44 victories, remained its fourth-highest scorer. Awarded the Victoria Cross (VC), Distinguished Service Order & Two Bars and Military Cross (MC).
Ball died on the evening of May 7, 1917; the Germans credited Lothar von Richthofen with downing Ball, but there is doubt; Ball may have become disoriented and lost control of his aircraft.
Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5
The Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5 is a British single-seat, single-engine, open-cockpit biplane fighter that first flew on November 22, 1916, entering service in April 1917 with No. 56 Squadron RFC. The S.E.5 was innately stable, an excellent gun platform with high maneuverability; it was one of the war’s fastest aircraft.
With only 77 S.E.5 aircraft completed, production changed to the improved S.E.5a (the most numerous variant), which entered service in June 1917. The RAF began to withdraw the S.E.5 from service shortly after the Armistice. 5,205 Airframes of all models were built before production ended post-war.
Constructed of wood, metal and fabric, the SE5 used a single Hispano-Suiza 8 or Wolseley Viper water-cooled V8 engine, driving a two or four-bladed wooden propeller. The armament consisted of one machine gun mounted on the port side, in front of the cockpit and one on Foster mounting on the upper wing. Up to four 25 lb (11 kg) Cooper bombs, two under each lower wing could also be carried.
