Corgi Aviation Archive series AA28603 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the GAF Canberra B.20 s/n A84-240 of No. 2 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), while deployed to Phan Rang AB, Vietnam, 1969.
Canberra B.20: B2s with extended range built under licence in Australia by Government Aircraft Factories (GAF).
No.2 Sqn in Vietnam
No 2 Squadron deployed to South Vietnam’s Phan Rang Air Base in April 1967 as part of Australia’s commitment to that conflict and remained there until June 1971. They operated as part of the United States Air Force’s 35th Tactical Fighter Wing.
No. 2 Sqn achieved an excellent record in Vietnam, flying what many considered obsolete bombers. Two aircraft and two crew members were lost during this deployment.
Bristol Beaufighter
The English Electric Canberra was Britain’s first jet-powered bomber. It is a three-crew, twin-engine turbojet medium bomber and later Photo-reconnaissance aircraft.
The Canberra first flew on May 13, 1949, and entered service on May 25, 1951, with No. 101 Sqn, RAF and saw combat during the Vietnam War and with both the British and Argentina during the Falklands War (Spanish: Guerra de Malvinas).
Canberra’s performance made it popular in the export market. Before production ended, 1,376 airframes, including those manufactured in Australia (GAF Canberra B20) and the USA (B-52 Canberra), were completed.
The RAF retired its last examples (PR.9 ) in July 2006, Australia in 1982, and the USA in 1983.
The Canberra is powered by two Rolls-Royce R.A.7 Avon axial-flow turbojet engines wing-mounted.
The armament consists of four cannons mounted in the rear bomb bay or two machine gun pods, and up to 4500 kg (10,000 lb) of stores can be carried in two internal bomb bays and 900 kg (2,000 lb) on two underwing hardpoints.
