Corgi Aviation Archive series AA28603 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the Bristol Beaufighter TF.X s/n NE775/X2 of No. 445 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), part of the “Anzac Strike Wing” stationed at RAF Langham in Norfolk, England, June 1944.
Anzac Strike Wing
In April 1944, No.455 Squadron RAAF and No. 489 Squadron RNZAF joined forces to form the “ANZAC Strike Wing”, part of RAF Coastal Command. They then moved from their base in Scotland to Langham to attack enemy convoys along the Dutch and north German coasts.
Coastal Command’s Beaufighter Strike Wings, although effective, losses were among the heaviest in the RAF.
Bristol Beaufighter
The Bristol Type 156 Beaufighter is a British two-seat, twin-engine, multi-role, monoplane aircraft of the Second World War that first flew on July 17, 1939, and entered service on July 27, 1940. Conceived as a heavy fighter, the Beaufighter proved to be an effective night fighter, torpedo bomber, and maritime strike/ground attack aircraft.
Five thousand nine hundred twenty-eight airframes were completed, including those manufactured in Australia, before production ended in September 1945.
The airframe is an all-metal construction with an enclosed cockpit. The Beaufighter uses two Bristol Hercules XVII or XVIII 14-cylinder air-cooled sleeve-valve radial piston engines wing-mounted, driving three-bladed Rotol constant-speed feathering propellers.
The armament consists of four cannons in the nose, six machine guns in the wings, one for defence and up to 220 kg (500 lb) under the fuselage and wings.
