Corgi AA28008 Aviation Archive

Corgi Aviation Archive series AA28008 is a 1/72 scale diecast model of the Messerschmitt BF 109E-4 taktische nummer (tactical number) G9+JV of Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 (Night Fighter Wing 1: NJG 1), Luftwaffe, Germany, 1940.

This Bf 109E was equipped with the Telefunken PeilG IV navigational direction finder. To minimise drag caused by the protruding directional finder loop, it utilised the Peilgerät antenna, which consists of a series of metal strips arranged in a “sunburst” pattern beneath a streamlined plexiglass cover.

Nachtjagdgeschwader 1, Luftwaffe

Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 (NJG 1) was a World War II German Luftwaffe night fighter wing formed in June 1940. It was tasked with the air defence of the Reich and was the most successful night fighter wing.

Messerschmitt Bf 109

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is a German single-seat, single-engine fighter, one of the most advanced fighters when introduced, and it achieved more aerial victories than any other type of fighter in World War II.

It first flew on May 29, 1935, and saw combat for the first time with the “Condor Legion” during the Spanish Civil War. The Luftwaffe withdrew its last Bf 109s from service in May 1945; they remained with the Spanish Air Force until 1965. They were built in Czechoslovakia, Spain, and Switzerland after the war.

The Junkers Jumo 210, liquid-cooled inverted V12 engines, powered most pre-war variants. Later, the Daimler-Benz DB 601 and DB 605 were also liquid-cooled inverted V12 engines.

The armament consisted of two machine guns mounted in the engine cowling atop the engine and a single cannon firing through a blast tube between the engine cylinder banks, known as a Motorkanone. The first with wing-mounted guns was the C-1, with one in each wing: two field-installed under-wing cannon pods and ordinance racks.
