Corgi AA27903 Aviation Archive
Corgi Aviation Archive series AA27903 replicates in 1/48-scale diecast the McDonnell Douglas FGR2 (F-4M) Phantom II s/n XV466 of No.1435 Flight, Royal Air Force (RAF), stationed at RAF Mount Pleasant, Falkland Islands, 1991.
No.1435 Flight RAF
No.1435 Flight is a Royal Air Force unit based at RAF Mount Pleasant, tasked with the air defence of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands. It currently operates the Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4.
The flight was established in late July 1941 as the Malta Night Fighter Unit (MNFU) at RAF Ta Kali, Malta. It moved to the Falklands in late 1983 and was based at RAF Stanely. With the arrival of the FGR2 Phantom IIs, it moved to RAF Mount Pleasant in 1988.
McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is an American tandem-seat, twin-engined, all-weather, long-range, carrier-capable supersonic interceptor fighter-bomber and, later, reconnaissance and Wild Weasel (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) aircraft.
The F-4’s maiden flight occurred on May 27, 1958, and entered service on December 30, 1960. Designed initially for the USN, it also served with the USAF, USMC, and other countries. The US military began to replace the F-4 during the 1980s, and reconnaissance and Wild Weasel variants were replaced in 1996. Production ended in 1981, with over 5,000 airframes built.
The F-4 used two General Electric J79s after burning turbojet engines. The F-4K (FG1) for the Royal Navy and F-4M (FGR2) for the Royal Air Force used Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines.
The Phantom did not carry guns until the F-4C was introduced with an external gun pod. The E was the first to have an internally mounted cannon. Nine external hardpoints could carry up to 7,250 kg (16,000 lb) of payload.
