Oxford Diecast 72AA005 History of Flight
Oxford Diecast History of Flight series 72AA005 replicates in 1/72 scale Diecast the Avro Anson Mk. I, s/n AW665, aircraft code B-PP of No.71 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) stationed at RAAF Station Lowood, Queensland, in 1943.
No. 71 Sqn, RAAF
No. 71 Squadron was a maritime patrol squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) during World War II. It was formed in January 1943 and conducted patrols off the east coast of Australia until it disbanded in August 1944.
Avro Anson
The Avro Anson is a British twin-engined multi-role aircraft developed from the Avro 652 airliner. The maiden flight took place on March 24, 1935, entering service in March 1936 with No 48 Squadron RAF. Designed for maritime surveillance, it was obsolete by World War II but found success as a multi-engined aircrew trainer.
The Anson Mk. I did see some combat on coastal patrols and air/sea rescue missions. The last Ansons were retired from RAF service in June 1968. Postwar, Ansons found use with small charter airlines and as executive aircraft. Production ended in 1952 with over 11,000 airframes built.
The Avro Anson fuselage construction used a welded steel tubing framework mostly covered in fabric with the nose in magnesium alloy. The wings are constructed primarily of plywood and spruce.
Anson uses two Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah, a seven-cylinder air-cooled radial engine, driving a two-bladed propeller. The armament consisted of a single machine gun in the forward fuselage, one in a dorsal turret and underwing racks carrying up to 160 kg (360 lb) of bombs.
