Pierre Clostermann
Pierre Henri Clostermann (1921 – 2006) was a French fighter ace who served with the RAF during World War II. He joined the Free French Air Force in the United Kingdom in March 1942. He retired from the military in July 1945 with the RAF rank of wing commander and the French rank of lieutenant. He is credited with 33 aerial victories and awarded the DSO, DFC & Bar, DSC (U.S. Army), Grand Croix de la Légion d’Honneur, Compagnon de l’Ordre de la Libération,
Médaille Militaire, Croix de Guerre 1939–45, with 27 citations, including 17 to the level of the army (palms) and two stars and Croix de la Valeur Militaire with two citations.
Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX
Developed as a stop-gap measure to counter the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in late 1941, the Spitfire Mk.IX was an Mk Vc airframe modified to take the more powerful Merlin 61 of the Mk VII and VIII, which were still a year away from entering service.
It first flew in April 1942 and became the most numerous variant, remaining in production and service until the end of the War. Manufactured in several sub-variants; the standard Mk IX, a low altitude LF Mk IX (the most produced sub-variant), the high altitude HF Mk IX, unarmed Photo Reconnaissance PR Mk IXs and the FR IXs with a single, port-facing, oblique camera.
The armament consisted of two cannons, two machine guns in the wings, and up to 230 kg (500 lb) of bombs on under-wing racks or the fuselage centre. It uses a single Rolls-Royce Merlin liquid-cooled V-12 piston engine driving a four-bladed Rotol propeller.
