G-AAZP
First registered to private owners on June 4, 1930, impressed into RAF service in September 1941 as s/n HL537, a communications hack. Sold into private hands in October 1946, registered G-AAZP, in November 1982, sold to RP Williams of Denford Manor, Hungerford, named “British Heritage”.
Flown from Mildenhall, England, to Melbourne, Australia, in 1984 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MacRobertson International Race. Returned to the UK by sea in February 1986.
de Havilland DH.80A Puss Moth
The de Havilland DH 80A Puss Moth is a British single-engine three-seat light utility aircraft. The maiden flight, a DH.80, occurred on September 9, 1929. The first production aircraft, DH.80A, first flew in March 1930. Used as a private and commercial aircraft, impressed into military service during WWII for the communication role.
Early in its career, the DH 80A suffered a series of fatal crashes with air turbulence causing wing flutter and structural failure; additional wing struts fixed the problem. Production ended in 1933 with 259 airframes built in the UK and 25 in Canada.
The fuselage was of fabric-covered steel tubing with a wing of wood with fabric sheathing. The tail units also used wood with fabric. The wings are folded backwards for storage or towing. Regular seating was for two but could carry a second passenger with the seats staggered.
It uses a single de Havilland Gipsy III, an inverted air-cooled, four-cylinder, inline engine driving a two-bladed propeller. Canadian-built aircraft used Gypsy Major engines, with slightly improved performance.
