K1824
This Puss Moth was delivered to the RAF in December 1930 and trialled as a high-speed communications aircraft. Moved to Air Officer Commanding Inland Area and Home Command Communications Flight in April 1931. Then to ‘E’ Flight, RAE Farnborough, in October 1932. Used for static testing following a series of Puss Moth accidents and tested to destruction in November 1934.
de Havilland DH.80A Puss Moth
The de Havilland DH 80A Puss Moth is a British single-engine three-seat light utility aircraft. The maiden flight, a DH.80, occurred on September 9, 1929. The first production aircraft, DH.80A, first flew in March 1930. They were used by private and commercial operators and in record-breaking flights by Bert Hinkler, James Allan “Jim” Mollison, Amy Johnson and Nevill Vintcent. They were impressed into service during WWII in the communication role.
Early in its career, the DH 80A suffered a series of fatal crashes with air turbulence that caused wing flutter and structural failure. Additional wing struts fixed the problem. However, production ended in 1933 with 259 airframes built in the UK and 25 in Canada.
The fuselage was of fabric-covered steel tubing, and the wings and tail assembly were wood with fabric sheathing. Regular seating was for two but could carry a second passenger with the seats staggered.
It uses a single de Havilland Gipsy III, an inverted air-cooled, four-cylinder, inline engine driving a two-bladed propeller. Canadian-built aircraft used Gypsy Major engines.
