Oxford Diecast History of Flight series 72DR008 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the DH.89A Dominie, s/n TX310, registration G-AIDL of the Classic Air Force.
G-AIDL
Brush Coachworks built this DH 89A Dominie, c/n 6968, in 1946, allocated RAF serial number ‘TX310’. It was registered as ‘G-AIDL’ in August 1946 when sold to private owners in the early 1990s and purchased by the Air Atlantique group.
de Havilland DH.89 Dragon Rapide
The de Havilland DH.89 Rapide is a British six to eight-seat, twin-engined, short-haul biplane airliner, a scaled-down version of the four-engined DH 86 Express. Design to replace the DH 84 Dragon, it first flew in April 1934 and entered service in July 1934 with Hillmans Airways Ltd.
Three armed DH 89Ms saw combat with the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War. With the outbreak of World War II, Rapides were impressed into military service for radio and navigation training. The British Air Ministry also ordered new airframes, designated “Dominie”, powered with the Gipsy Queen engine, a military version of the Gipsy Six. Production ended in 1946 with 727 airframes built.
The RAF withdrew its last Dominies from service in 1955 and the Royal Navy in the early 60s. Post-war, many surplus military aircraft went into commercial service.
The de Havilland Dragon Rapide construction is wood and fabric and uses two de Havilland Gipsy Sixes, six-cylinder air-cooled inverted inline engines mounted on the lower wings, driving a two-bladed propeller.
