Oxford Diecast 72AA004 – 1/72 Scale Avro Anson Mk.I, No. 233 Sqn, RAF
Oxford Diecast 72AA006 diecast model replicates in 1/72 scale the Avro Anson Mk.I, s/n K6298, of No.233 Squadron, Royal Air Force (RAF) Coastal Command, circa 1937. No. 233 Squadron RAF formed at Dover on August 31, 1918, and took part in the tail end of WWI before disbanded. It reformed on May 18, 1937, at RAF Tangmere, part of Coastal Command equipped with the Anson, flying reconnaissance patrols and carrying out transportation duties. Lockheed Hudsons replaced the Ansons by the end of 1939. Post-WWII, the squadron again disbanded, reformed once more in 1960, disestablished for the last time in 1964.
Avro Anson
The Avro Anson is a British twin-engined multi-role aircraft developed from the Avro 652 airliner. The maiden flight took place on March 24, 1935, entering service in March 1936 with No 48 Squadron RAF. Production ended in 1952 with over 11,000 airframes built. Designed for maritime surveillance, it was obsolete by World War II but found success as a multi-engined aircrew trainer. The Anson Mk.I did see some combat as a number carried out coastal patrols and air/sea rescue missions. The last Ansons were retired from RAF service in June 1968. Postwar, Ansons found use with small charter airlines and as executive aircraft.
The Avro Anson fuselage construction used a welded steel tubing framework mostly covered in fabric with the nose in magnesium alloy. The low mounted cantilever wings were constructed primarily of plywood and spruce. The retractable undercarriage was a tailwheel type with the main units mounted and folding up into the engine nacelles.
It uses two Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah, a seven-cylinder air-cooled radial engine, driving a two-bladed propeller. These gave the Anson a maximum speed of 302 km/h (188 mph), a range of 1,271 km (790 mi) and a service ceiling of 5,791 m (19,000 ft).
The armament consisted of a single .303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers machine gun in the forward fuselage and a Lewis gun mounted in a dorsal turret. With up to 160 kg (360 lb) of bombs under the wings.
